JANIECE SMITH

Brought to you in partnership with Rod Beckwith – http://mrjv.com

Highest Education: Four years of college with a degree in dental hygiene.

Year Started Business: 2002

Type Of Business: "My business, www.expressprofitsonline.com, is a company that teaches people how to successfully start and operate an eBay business. After successfully selling products on eBay and becoming a power seller, I was continually being asked by others to help them do the same. So after a lot of hard work and soul searching, I went into the consultation business. I now promote my eBook, as well as consultation services that will give members a step-by-step outline to success. I also share with my members the trials and tribulations I went through in order to help them avoid some of the same pitfalls."

Market: "My market is very wide. My ideal customer can be broken up into two categories. The first category would be the individuals who have already started an eBay business but who are having difficulty making a profit due to the method in which they obtain their products, as well as the type/brand of products they're selling. The second category, would be those individuals who are interested in starting their own business and have been interested in eBay for some time. These are people whom we have to start from square one because, oftentimes, they don't know the first thing about starting a business and/or selling on eBay."

Best Month (Gross Revenues): $94,000

Hours Worked Per Week During Startup Phase: "Like all businesses, you have to put a lot of time and effort in the beginning. When I first decided to write my eBook, How An Overworked, Traveling, Soggy Sandwich Eating Dental Hygienist Makes $11,212 A Month On eBay, I was still completely enthralled with my eBay business. So, I was doing all of the typical stuff I always did; taking pictures, listing, shipping, etc., plus writing my book. It took me a couple of weeks working in the night to write my book. I didn't expect for my book to be so popular! Once it got out there and people started reading it and referring me, my book sales went through the roof!

"At that time, I was not only working with my normal everyday eBay business, but I was also getting a ton of extra e-mails and inquiries about my services. People wanting me to coach them one-on-one, needing more assistance, asking for more information, etc. At this point in my business, I was overworking myself. This completely defeated my sole purpose of starting my eBay business, which was to work from home and be with my boys, Ethan (5) and Gage (3). I was working 12 hours a day and then going in at night when my kids were in bed and working another couple of hours. This was pretty much the crossroad in my business. Do I continue selling on eBay and give up on my book and all of the business it's bringing in? Or, do I give up on selling on eBay for a time to see how well things pan out with my book and the new business I've stumbled upon?"

Hours Worked Per Week Now: "I typically work two, full eight-hour days per week, usually Monday and Tuesday. I work at least two hours a day every other day of the week because I have to answer e-mails and make sure to keep up to date with all of my members, in case something comes up and they need me."

Favorite Business Magazines: Entrepreneur and Success

Favorite Business Books Or Authors: The Ultimate Marketing Plan, by Dan Kennedy and Awaken The Giant Within, by Tony Robbins

Relaxes By: Drinking a hot cup of coffee and watching her boys play—"There is nothing better in the world. But, when it's just my time, I like going to the movies, having lunch with my close friends to talk about life and getting older, and shopping on eBay, of course."

Keeps In Shape By: Spending time with her two kids (ages 5 and 3) and riding a gym model stationary bike while watching Fox News

Favorite Part Of The Job: "Wow…This is a very hard question to narrow down. There are so many things I love about my job. I think the biggest blessing that has come from my job is being able to be home and watch my boys grow. It was very hard to leave a job where I made $300 a day to be at home with them, but it was the most important thing in my eyes at the time. So, being able to start a successful business and still make the kind of money I was accustomed to, and more, made my decision that much better! I also like not having to go by someone else's schedule. If I need to take two days off, I can. Yes. I have to make it up somewhere, but I don't have to worry about letting my boss down or asking for the time two weeks in advance. And, in what other job would I have had the opportunity to meet people from all over the country, all over the world—Australia, Europe, India, New York, Florida, Texas, and everywhere in between? It amazes me everyday to meet and talk with new people from every walk of life. I get to talk to everyday people like myself all the way up to a rocket scientist! What other job allows that?"

Least Favorite Part Of The Job: "The least favorite part of my job is trying to juggle family time and work time and answering a multitude of e-mails. It is nice to work from home, but there are downfalls. It's always there with you. So when work is over, even if I'm worried about getting something done in the office, I have to limit myself and know this is my family's time. This can be hard, but I'm getting better as time goes on."

Companies Admired: "I don't admire any one particular company. I admire everyone who has the fortitude and will to develop a successful small home-based business. I know they are the true entrepreneurs. They are the ones who wake up every morning and know what they do today is what will pay their bills tomorrow."

Favorite Quotes:

Progress always involves risk; you can't steal second base and keep your foot on first. - Frederick Wilcox

No matter how small and unimportant what we're doing may seem, if we do it well, it may soon become the step that will lead us to better things. - Channing Pollock

All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me...You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you. - Walt Elias Disney

The Person Who Most Influenced Her Life: "Some might think this would be a rich successful, maybe even famous, entrepreneur, but it's not. Although many successful people have inspired me, my mother is the only one who really influenced me. My mother married very young and had me at a young age. She aspired to go to college and become a marine biologist, but life with kids moved on and the more time that passed, the more that possibility faded away. She devoted her life to being our mom. She taught me to be strong, honest, hard working...everything a parent does. Although I learned these things from her, I learned more from her behavior than her words.

"From watching my mother through the years, I learned from her not only how to be a great mother myself, but also how important it was to always be able to take care of my family financially. She came to a point in her life where she wasn't able to do that. She was working her butt off at numerous jobs just to give us what we needed and take care of us. She never complained, but I could tell it killed her inside to let us see her this way and not be able to give us things she wanted to.

"She stressed the importance of a good education and always being able to take care of myself, if necessary. I was so proud of my mother's strength and perseverance through her life, and when she graduated from college at the age of 35 and became a respiratory therapist, I knew I could do the same. I did so after high school. I got my degree in dental hygiene. My mother and I were the first two women in our family to receive a college education.

"My mother was very proud of my accomplishments, but she was also proud of my decision to quit my job and stay at home with my babies. Her energy and open mindedness wore off on me through the years and I think that is the No. 1 key in my being able to see past what "society" expects you to do to make a living, and what you really CAN do!"

Heroes: "Heroes come in many different forms. A hero to me is simply anyone who is willing to do something selfless to help another without thinking of his or her own personal consequences first."

Special Business Achievements/Honors: "I think my biggest business achievement I am most proud of was the completion of my eBay Home Study Course. My husband and I spent endless hours, long days, and sleepless nights making it perfect. I thought we would never get it done but we did. Now when I look back I'm glad we put this much time into it. I have never had one person join my course and complain about it not having enough information."

Months Before Achieving A Profit: I made a profit my first month. In fact, I was making a profit in my first two weeks. That's the great thing about the information business—you don't have a lot of initial overhead, and the profits come quick if you work hard and work smart.
